We shouldn't pay for mother's fourth child on IVF

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with Katrina van Wersch's opinion that there should not be any taxpayer funding for IVF for someone to have a fourth child (SCD letters, December 26).

In fact, I can think of dozens of examples where Medicare isn't available for important medication or other vital treatments.

For goodness sake, take a long hard look at people on low incomes.

Trying to even get a decent pair of prescription glasses has become ridiculously difficult for them and almost impossible to obtain.

So when I hear of this sort of unnecessary expense such as funding IVF for someone to have a fourth child - excuse me, surely you've got to be joking?

If this really is the case that Medicare can be misused for this sort of nonsense, then this is plainly wrong and should be rectified ASAP.

Australia and planet Earth already have serious problems with overpopulation. It is truly irresponsible for Medicare and our Federal Government to allow this crisis to worsen by allocating funding towards a procedure that escalates this grave dilemma.
