Volunteer keeping it real for Headland Golf Club

GOLF: The Headland Golf Club has seen a lot of change in the past 25 years, and 83-year-old Bill Boucaut has seen every one of them.

Retired from South Australia, Bill joined the club and immediately started volunteering.

It wasn't long before he got involved with the Greens Committee and began coordinating a group of 25 volunteers responsible for the upkeep of the course.

"I had just joined the club and I was happy to help out because I enjoyed gardening and it needed a lot of work," Bill said.

"I love being with the fellas and the sense of achievement for what you've done.

"The time is getting close to when I will have to pull out, but I'm still coordinating for now."

Some of the most memorable moments include the day when they cut the fairway with hand mowers because they were too wet for machinery.

Since then Bill is also become an organiser of the Headland Golf Club's annual seniors tournament and has been recognised for his work with a lifetime membership.

Fellow organiser and volunteer Graham Bates said the club would miss Bill when he finally retires from the job.

"The members are aware of the high standard of work he does," Graham said.

"The man hours that he provides and all the things he does for the club.

"He's a great bloke. Very social sort of fella and well-liked by all the members."
