Boy mauled by dog in critical condition in Townsville

UPDATE 9.50am:

THE three-year-old boy is currently in a critical condition in Townsville Hospital.

Initial confirmed reports were that the three-year-old boy was at Brisbane Mater Children's Hospital in a stable condition.

A THREE-YEAR-OLD Mackay boy has undergone surgery at Brisbane Mater Children's Hospital after being mauled by a dog.

The boy was attacked by a German shepherd on Grant St in Mackay city about 6.45pm on Saturday.

He was rushed to Mackay Base Hospital in a critical condition then later flown to Brisbane.

A Brisbane Mater Children's Hospital spokeswoman said last night the boy was in a stable condition and had undergone surgery yesterday afternoon.

The boy's family is by his side at the Brisbane hospital.

Earlier media reports indicated he may have been bitten on the neck, severely puncturing his main artery and causing him to lose a large quantity of blood.

A Mackay Base Hospital spokeswoman said the boy's grandfather also received treatment for dog bites on his forearm.

Police, as well as Queensland Ambulance Service crews, were at the scene on Saturday evening.

Mackay Regional Council corporate communications and marketing manager Ken Furdek said local laws officers impounded the dog at the request of the police.

On-call council officers went to the house on Grant St to impound the dog at 7.30pm, he said.

"The German shepherd was being cared for at Mackay pound until police completed their investigation," he said.

Police will make the decision on whether the dog needs to be euthanised or not.

"Our officers provide police with any assistance for their investigation," Mr Furdek said.

The Mater spokeswoman said the boy was in a stable condition when he arrived and had remained so while at the children's hospital.
