SOAPBOX: Rio fever sickening
I'M GOING to become even more unpopular than I am very quickly here.
But I'm doing it.
I'm calling out all of you fair-weathered Olympic fans.
Seriously. I've had enough.
Watching people crowd around the television, cheering, screaming, offering expert analysis, for a swimming final.
Name me the last time you ever stopped what you were doing to watch a swimming event.
Probably the last Olympics.
I get it's great to jump in head first into the four-yearly fever but where have you been for the past three-and-a-bit years?
Were you glued to the television during the Olympic trials? Cheering madly at the endless training sessions these people put themselves through, tirelessly, for a shot at glory?
I'm going to put my money on a no there.
It's classic Australia.
Pay next to no attention during the tough times but come the Olympics we're all lifelong fans. Swimming is just one example.
Wouldn't it be great if these athletes experienced the same level of love, admiration and support for the other three years of the cycle rather than a fortnight of fawning every four years.
Surely we can share some of our fondness for rugby league, football and more with some of these other sports we supposedly now love.
