Scott Hillier: How to catch big whiting
Weather and tides
Moderate winds forecast for most of the weekend, so anglers will be kept back in the rivers and creeks. Great run in the tide with the new moon on the way and should generate a bit of a bite.
Species on the move
Whiting will be a popular fish to chase during summer as they tend to school up. At the moment there have been some really good quality catches over the 35cm mark.

Targeting the big whiting
These bigger fish tend to bite better under the cover of darkness and I like the run out tide as the water drains off the flats. For bait if you can locate some small soldier crabs around the low tide, then fish with a nice long shank whiting hook on a running ball sinker rig placing about 5 or 6 soldier crabs up the shank of the hook. Also live yabbies are working well.
Spots
Picnic Point, Goat Island, Bli Bli, Mid Noosa and Pumicestone Passage.
