Scene set for epic Sunshine Pro surf battle

Sunshine Coast surfers are right in the mix as the top seeds dominated the opening day of the Australian Open Of Surfing Sunshine Coast Pro yesterday.

Coolum Beach’s testing 3-4ft waves set the scene for some enthralling contests ahead of today’s open men and open women divisions.

The surf forecast is for an easterly swell pushing through the Coast, with moderate winds.

Other top female surfers progressing to finals day include Sophie McCulloch (Alexandra Headland), Siena Hanna (Twin Waters), current State Junior champion Ellia Smith (Coolum Beach) and Vittoria Farmer (Noosa).

The Gold Coast’s Liam O’Brien (Burleigh Heads) has eased through his round one heat, defeating Jay Occhilupo (Elanora) and Luke Pennisi (Parrearra).

Surfing contest veteran Piper Harrison (Coolangatta) eased through her round one heat, battling the tough conditions today to defeat 2019 State Champion Siena Hanna (Twin Waters) and Anna Toohey (Dicky Beach).

Harrison scored a 7.33 out of a possible 10 and a 5.17 for a combined heat total of 12.50 out of a possible 20 to progress through to the finals today.

“That was a fun heat, it feels awesome to get back in the water - it’s been a while,” Harrison said.

“It’s good to get back in the groove of surfing in competitions,:" she said.

Other top male surfers progressing through to round 2 include Noosa’s Cooper Davies and Alister Reginato of Alexandra Headland.

They will surf off against talents like Jay Occhilupo (Elanora), Josh Boyle (Currumbin), Thomas Carvalho (Coolangatta), Ty Richardson (Palm Beach, and Sheldon Simkus (Gold Coast.
