ISABELLA Nichols' stunning win at the WSL world junior championships in Portugal confirmed she is surfing's brightest young prospect.

The 18-year-old from Coolum Beach won the coveted under-20 title in scintillating fashion.

Touted as a future World Championship Tour contender, Nichols won the final over Hawaii's Mahina Maeda 18.30 to 11.16 in three to four-foot waves at the Ribeira d'ilhas point break after progressing through six rounds of tough competition.

"I'm so happy; I don't even know what to say. I'm speechless," she said.

LOCAL hoop Luke Tarrant was disqualified from racing for six months after pleading guilty to taking banned substances.

A urine sample he provided in December was found to contain cocaine.

Tarrant is a prolific rider who was adjudged the state's rising star at an awards ceremony last year, and it is hoped he can bounce back in strong fashion. The 21-year-old will be out of action until July 12.
