Pork industry group CEO talks future growth with young leaders
Pork will become Australia’s protein of choice – or at least that’s the objective of the industry’s peak body.
Australian Pork Limited CEO Margo Andrae was in Toowoomba yesterday for an Australian Pork Young Leaders meeting.
It was the first opportunity she’d had in months to get into Queensland given the border closures, and was looking to engage with Queensland producers about the future of the industry.
Becoming Australia’s protein of choice is a bold goal, but in recent years the industry has increased domestic fresh pork consumption by 35 per cent.
The pork industry has also achieved significant increases in productivity, industry value and
animal welfare, plus reduced the industry’s carbon footprint.
Ms Andrae said the new strategic plan was built on industry success but sets an ambitious agenda for the next five years.
“Australian pork is increasingly popular, with more people getting pork on their forks than ever before,” Ms Andrae said.
“Aussie pig producers have a lot to be proud of, with impressive gains in productivity, industry value growth, improved animal welfare and piggeries now using 60% less carbon.
“We’re proud of those achievements, but by 2025 we want to be the number one protein. We want to sustainably add $1 billion to farmgate value.”
The plan, developed with input from across the supply chain, is underpinned by marketing, policy and research for the $5.3 billion industry.
It is an industry which directly employs 35,000 people and supports regional communities in every state.
“The Australian pork industry is smaller than rival proteins, but this is our greatest asset, allowing our producers to be innovative and agile,” Ms Andrae said.
“The next five years will see a focus on creating new opportunities. Not only are we continuing to improve productivity, but we’re looking to market diversification – using the whole of pig for nonpork products like nutraceuticals or materials to build new roads.”
The new plan also has a focus on building the industry’s climate friendly farming practices.
