Plea for properties to expand breast-cancer retreats

QUEENSLAND women dealing with breast cancer are set to benefit from an expansion of accommodation retreats made available at no cost by national charity The OTIS Foundation.

Queensland mother-of-three Heather Lloyd said the time she had spent with her family at a Sunshine Coast retreat following her breast cancer diagnosis in 2015 was both healing and powerful.

"It was a holiday we could not afford financially after treatment and loss of income, yet it was exactly what we all needed," she said.

To help the charity's Queensland expansion from its current three properties to six, The OTIS Foundation is seeking holiday accommodation owners to consider donating time at their property when it may otherwise sit vacant.

Noosa's Caple family offers time at their apartment at Sunshine Beach.

Nina Caple said her family originally had been motivated to provide their property after losing a close friend to leukemia.

"We have always said we wanted to make our holiday home available to people living with cancer," she said.

"It is such a positive example we can offer to our children about how to help people who need it most.

"We've found the process of helping others through sharing our property with The OTIS Foundation both easy and genuinely rewarding.

"To think that we can, in a small way, enable people to escape some of the pressures of breast cancer and spend quality time with their loved ones is incredibly gratifying."

The OTIS Foundation is interested in properties that can ideally be available for eight weeks or more annually and are situated in an environment that allows privacy for guests to relax and reconnect with loved ones.

The charity takes responsibility for booking guests during the times specified as available at each property.

The costs associated with cleaning and linen services when in use by OTIS guests will also be covered by the charity with the support of funding received from the Dry July Foundation.
