Noosa Lions score perfect 10 wins so far this year
Football: While the Socceroos were warming up and the French worked on their diving style, Noosa Premier Men took on a determined Coolum outfit on Saturday night.
Belying their lowly position on the ladder, Coolum put up a spirited defensive effort playing most of the match with just 10 men on the pitch.
Led by their captain who played from box to box, Coolum managed to dull the edge of Noosa's attack.
It was the speed of an Andre Jancevski run from midfield that caught them unawares and the beautifully timed cross into the goal found an ever- hungry Matt Thompson waiting to slot the ball into the back of the net midway through the first half.
It was the only time the scorer was bothered all night but enough for Noosa to rack up a rare 10 wins out of 10 games - an achievement matched by the Lions under-14 Division 1.
After successfully predicting the scoreline pre-match, coach Aherne Evans said: "That was a good test, the Coolum team we faced tonight is significantly different from the side in round 1.
"They had players with an ability to attack and deliver dangerous balls from the set piece.
"It was interesting to see our young back line handle that. Even with a man sent off early in the game Coolum was very stubborn and pushed til the very end.
"From our perspective, it was a one you would class as an ugly win however, all the same, it is three points and a pleasing clean sheet.”
The Coolum reserve side has also improved significantly, inflicting the reserve-grade side's second defeat of the season after being trounced in the first round by Noosa. Despite the 2-1 loss Noosa retains second position on the ladder.
In a top-of-the-ladder clash the U17 Division 1 side had a narrow loss to Maroochydore on Saturday then backed up for a rain- delayed match on Sunday to convincingly beat Caloundra 5-1.
The victory brought them to equal first with the Maroochy side on both points and goal difference.
