'No such thing as safe seats', Coast MP says

AS THE federal election draws closer, Member for Fairfax Ted O'Brien has downplayed claims the Sunshine Coast is "LNP safe".

It comes after Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey slammed the Federal Government for not contributing 80 per cent toward the $780 million North Coast Rail Line from Beerburrum to Nambour.

Mr Bailey said the Coalition had short-changed Queensland on the project by at least $250 million and did not "play by its own funding rules because of the Sunshine Coast's safe LNP seats".

"Local members like Ted O'Brien and Andrew Wallace hold their seats with safe margins," he said.

"It's time they took some risks and started asking the tough questions of their own government, which has abandoned its responsibility to properly back the transport infrastructure needed to support the growing Sunshine Coast."

Mr O'Brien hit back at Mr Bailey's comments, saying there was "no such thing as a safe seat".

"In the last term of government the single-most marginal seat in the country was the seat of Fairfax," he said.

"Compare what the Federal Government delivered to Fairfax in the last term, as the most marginal seat in the country, to this term and they're worlds apart. I do not know any region in the country which is receiving as much Federal funding as we are."

Mr O'Brien said $3.2 billion had been delivered for local stretches of the Bruce Highway from Pine Rivers to Curra, as well as $390 million for the North Coast Rail Line and $180 million for the upgrade of the Sunshine Coast Airport.

"Those three ticket items alone demonstrate the fact that the LNP is delivering in spades for our region," he said.

The Daily has contacted Labor's candidate for Fairfax, Julie McGlone, for comment.
