New bridge lowers flood risk
A NEW concrete bridge has been built to replace the old timber bridge on Wegner Rd at North Arm, which will minimise flooding risks, improve safety and reduce maintenance costs.
The upgrade also included a new roadside shelter, constructed using timber sleepers salvaged from the old bridge.
"It will provide a great rest stop for pedestrians,” Sunshine Coast Council Division 10 councillor Greg Rogerson said.
"The old timber bridge had reached the end of its serviceable life, meaning it could no longer be economically maintained to the required safety standards.
"The new concrete bridge, which was completed just before Christmas, will last long into the future and require much less maintenance. It is also marginally higher, which will improve access along the road and to properties during some flood events.
"We were limited in how high the new bridge could be positioned, as further uplift would have risked flooding issues for upstream properties, but locals should notice a difference next time it floods.”
