Mayor says rail duplication 'crucial' for Coast
MAYOR Mark Jamieson says the Sunshine Coast can't afford to return to the "neglect” that existed from previous federal governments.
Cr Jamieson was responding to Queensland Transport Minister Mark Bailey's criticism for the Federal Government's failure to fund 80 per cent of the North Coast Rail Line duplication.
Cr Jamieson said the rail line was a critical transport infrastructure project for the Sunshine Coast and Queensland more broadly, given it was the major bottle neck in a key freight transport corridor.
"The outdated infrastructure that is the North Coast Rail Line impacts directly on increasing congestion on the Bruce Highway,” he said.
"Minister Bailey's media release fails to point out what action the Queensland Government has taken to secure commitments from the Federal Opposition to fund the North Coast Rail Line duplication and indeed, other major infrastructure projects for the Sunshine Coast.
"To date, the Federal Opposition has made no commitment to upgrade the Bruce Highway from Caboolture to the Nambour-Maroochydore interchange or the duplication of the North Coast Rail Line.
"Likewise, they've given no indication that timing and funding for these projects will be assured.
"This region cannot afford to return to the neglect that existed ... prior to 2016.”
