Car seized, investigations launched after pedestrian killed
UPDATE: Police have launched investigations after a 59-year-old tourist was struck and killed by a car while crossing a road in Noosaville.
The man sustained head injuries after he was hit by a white Toyota hatchback near the intersection of Hilton Terrace and Gympie Terrace on Monday at 5.30pm.
Paramedics rushed him to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, but he died as hospital staff prepared to airlift him to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.
Police believe the man, who lived in Victoria, was holidaying in the Noosa area and was staying in accommodation near the crash scene.
Noosa Police officer in charge Senior Sergeant Ben Carroll said it was too early to say whether charges would be laid, but the driver of the vehicle, a Tewantin resident, had been "fully co-operative" with police investigations.
Forensic crash investigators made an in-depth survey and analysis of the scene, and will replicate the events of the crash as part of the investigation.
The car has been seized for mechanical inspection.
Snr Sgt Carroll said it remained unclear whether the man was walking across or near the pedestrian crossing when he was struck.
"Our forensic crash investigators were working with police from Noosa to piece together the circumstances behind the crash," Snr Sgt Carroll said.
He said the man's next of kin in Victoria had been notified of the death, and were making arrangements to travel to Noosa and collect the man's body.
Traffic detours were in place well into the evening as forensic crash officers examined the scene, with vehicles redirected along Beckmans Rd.
Snr Sgt Carroll said the fatality served as a tragic message for caution.
"It's a timely reminder for pedestrians and motorists to take care at crossings," he said.
He urged all pedestrians to make sure cars came to a stop before walking across a pedestrian crossing.
