Man buys paper, tries to rob shop

UPDATE 2.50PM: Police say two armed men fled empty-handed after a staff member at Buck's Bakery was threatened at knife point this morning.

A police spokesman said two men entered the Cribb St bakery at 6.45am, with one of the men purchasing a newspaper.

"As the female employee opened the cash register, this man produced a knife and threatened her," the spokesman said.

The second man stood near the front door armed with a metal bar.

Police said the woman retreated to the rear of the business due to the threats.

"Both men pushed past the front counter into the service area where one man has attempted to pick up the cash register and leave the store.

"A male employee who was working at the rear of the business challenged both men, who then fled the store."

They left in a blue or green sedan without the cash register or any property.

Investigations are continuing.
