Joint effort reins in fire at Caloundra
THE fire that began at Caloundra South on Friday is under control and the smoke haze has dispersed.
The fire started in a mulched product stockpile at the southern end of Racecourse Rd, behind the Caloundra Industrial Estate, with large smoke plumes affecting Caloundra suburbs, particularly in the Little Mountain area.
Sunshine Coast Council's local disaster co-ordinator, Andrew Ryan, said QFRS had been on-site co-ordinating the control and extinguishing of the fire since it began, with council providing heavy earth-moving equipment to create fire breaks and spread the mulch to help put it out.
"I am pleased to say emergency services and the rural fire brigade staff who came from all over the region have done a fantastic job over the past two days," Mr Ryan said.
"At 5pm, it was estimated 80% of the fire was extinguished. The smoke hazard is minimal, with air sampling in the local community showing 0% readings."
QFES will stay on site overnight to keep a watch over the area until it is fully extinguished today.
