OPINION: Step in right direction to stop home violence
IT'S with some real relief that we welcome the Queensland Government's $31 million funding package to help address the state's problem with domestic violence.
When the Daily joined forces with our sister papers across the state, we asked you, our readers, to help us lobby for specialist domestic violence courts and mandatory respectful relationship programs in schools. Yesterday's announcement includes funding to trial a domestic violence court on the Gold Coast.
But the campaign to stamp out Terror At Home is far from over.
In coming weeks you will see an educational feature in the Daily, which will further help raise awareness as to why people commit family violence.
We will continue to work with local organisations to get the message out there, and we will keep telling governments that more needs to be done, including better education for our youth.
This is a welcome step in the right direction, but there is still a long way to go.
