Hipwood to roar at Lions after being selected first-round

AFL: Eric Hipwood is officially a Brisbane Lion after being selected by the club at last night's AFL National Draft at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

The 18-year-old, who developed his skills at the Caloundra Panthers, was a first-round pick at No.14.

Richmond put in a bid for him but the Brisbane Lions matched it with two of their second-round selections.

A towering 202cm defender/forward who is a Brisbane Lions Academy product, Hipwood is very agile for his size. He played a major role in Queensland's under-18 representative team and was also a member of the AFL Academy.

He will join the only other current AFL player from the area, Peregian Beach's Jonathan Freeman, at the Lions.

Hipwood has followed in the footsteps of recent former players Alik Magin (Pomona to Gold Coast), Sam Reid (Caloundra to Bulldogs/GWS) and Josh Drummond (Maroochydore to Brisbane).

The athletic player learnt his craft at the now defunct Chancellor Park, before later joining Caloundra, where his father Brad is now president.
