Graffiti vandals strike in Mackay overnight
A WAVE of vandalism has left residents shocked after a graffiti spree left property damaged in Mackay overnight.
Police are searching for witnesses to the vandalism, which occurred in East Mackay in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Five separate instances in Kippen Street, Kilgour Street and Shellfish Street were reported to police.
A police media spokeswoman said that it was obviously the same people who went on the vandalism spree.
One victim to the overnight outbreak, Taina Suokallio, woke up at 7.30 this morning to discover the words "2018 f*** the police" spray painted in white on her car.
Vandalised on the passenger side and out of sight, a neighbour pointed it out to her.
The East Mackay Mum said "I was devastated, I was just in shock".
"If other people didn't inform me, I wouldn't of known and I would've been driving around in the car," she said.
"I could not believe it, what a good start to the year 2018."
Miss Suokallio said she luckily had an expensive paint protector on her vehicle, but spent hours scrubbing the graffiti off.
She also confirmed that her neighbours fell victim to the overnight attacks with one being woken up by his dogs around 2am, they believe that's when the attacks took place.
"I wasn't the only one... there was a lot of people that got hit last night," she said.
Miss Suokallio, said she lives in a beautiful area with nice people and nice houses "not like the slums" so she wasn't sure "where these worms are coming out of".
"Get a life, what is it going around destroying peoples property at those hours of the morning, haven't they got anything else to do with their lives?" she asked.
"I feel sorry for people like that if that's what they've got."
Miss Suokallio said that she didn't know what the answer was, but something needed to be done.
"It's children, it's young kids," she said.
"But you do have to ask the question, have we created it?"
Police are investigating the situation and urge anyone with information to contact Police Link on 131 444.
