Galekovic makes move to Melbourne City

MELBOURNE City has made the first moves of its off-season, signing former Adelaide United captain Eugene Galekovic to a two-year deal.

The 2016 FFA Cup champion has also announced the extension of Anthony Caceres' loan deal from parent club Manchester City, while confirming that long-time midfielder Paulo Retre had been released.

The signing of star goalkeeper Galekovic has been rumoured for months, particularly in light of the departure of Denmark international Thomas Sorensen.

Dean Bouzanis will remain, but Galekovic, an eight-time Socceroo, will be expected to claim the No. 1 mantle for the start of the 2017-18 campaign.

It is a return home for Melbournian, Galekovic, who played for Melbourne Victory between 2005-07 before moving to Adelaide where he enjoyed a successful 10-year stint.

The 36-year-old made 238 A-League appearances for United, won the 2014 FFA Cup, the 2015-16 A-League title and was named in the PFA team of the season five times.

"I'm delighted to be joining Melbourne City," Galekovic said.

"This is a great club, an ambitious club which gives its players every chance to succeed both on and off the field.

"To have the opportunity to return home and continue my career in Melbourne is very exciting and hopefully I can use my experience to push City to even greater heights."
