Fund set up for fallen jockey Desiree Gill

RACING Queensland and the National Jockeys Trust has established a fund in honour of Bundaberg jockey Desiree Gill, who died at the weekend after a race fall at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club.

Racing Minister Steve Dickson said race clubs around Australia would also pay tribute to Ms Gill by dedicating races in her memory this weekend.

"Desiree was widely admired and loved for her passion for the racing industry and she will be sorely missed," Mr Dickson said.

Mr Dickson will attend the Roma Races on Saturday, where the Cup race has been renamed the XXXX Gold Desiree Gill Memorial Cup.

Race meetings in Queensland tomorrow include Eagle Farm, Gold Coast, Julia Creek, Clermont and Roma.

The race meeting at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday will also include a race in Ms Gill's honour.

NSW and Tasmania will pay tribute to Ms Gill during their race meetings todayFri.

Racing Queensland CEO Darren Condon said Ms Gill's family would decide in the next few weeks as to how the funds would be used.

"Racing is like a family and the industry is renowned for pulling together especially in times of grief," he said.

Mr Condon said $20,000 in prizemoney from the two races abandoned following the fall at Saturday's meeting would also be donated to the fund.

He said a funeral would be held for Ms Gill on Monday at The Pavilion, Gympie Turf Club, at 10.30am.
