Noosa candidate in unusual battle with Electoral Commission
What's in a name?
Well, quite a lot as one Noosa Council councillor candidate is discovering.
In the lead up to the March 28 election, nominee Yanni Van Zijl is facing some unusual challenges with the Electoral Commission.
It's seems there is some confusion with her name.
Yanni's birth name is Marieanne.
"Yanni is a nickname," she said.
In preparing her promotions and campaigning, Yanni contacted the Electoral Commission to confirm she could run under the name Yanni.
"I rang the electoral role five weeks ago and I said, 'if I run I'd like to run as Yanni'," she said.
"They said that's not a problem, we don't see an issue."
"Then on Monday I received a call saying that may not be possible and I'll have to run under my real name."
"The funny things is she is like a fictitious person," she said.
"But no one that has known me within 20 years knows me by that name."
As you will see from the below video, Yanni, or Marieanne, is remaining in good spirits.
We discovered Yanni's issues with her name after catching up with her to discuss the election feature, 'Five things we didn't know about.'
With so much emphasis on campaigning, policies and meet and greet events, it's easy to forget our Noosa Council candidates are still just real people.
In this unique election feature, we will endeavour to find out about the person behind the policies.
In the lead up to the March 28 election, each of our council nominees have been invited to share with us a little about who they are away from politics.
Below are the rest of Yanni Van Zijl's 'Five things we didn't know'.
