Eight reasons to join the RFS

SPREAD across 93% of Queensland, the Rural Fire Service has about 36,000 volunteers.

And you could be one of them.

Eight reasons to join the RFS

1. Learn new skills such as teamwork, incident management, leadership skills, fire behaviour and communication.

2. Meet great people and make new friends.

3. Protect your community.

4. Learn to fight fires and about fire prevention.

5. Educate your community.

6. Help the wider population when deployed to other states to assist during fire disasters.

7. It looks great on your resume.

8. Help save lives.

How to join

Find out which brigade is closest to you and contact the area office or the First Officer to discuss membership. You must be over 16 years of age to join.

All applicants over the age of 18 must undertake a criminal history check prior to acceptance and registered juniors must complete this once they turn 18.

Once you have discussed joining with the local officer, they will provide you with a volunteer application form which you will need to fill it out and submit. Having a criminal history does not automatically exclude you from joining a brigade. Consideration will be given to the offence and the circumstances surrounding it prior to a final decision being made.

When you approach the brigade to discuss joining, they will provide you with the Volunteer Application Form, which includes a Criminal History Check component. You will need to complete this form and return them in the reply paid envelope provided.

The brigade will vote on your application at the time of initial interest.
