2015 the fifth hottest year on record

A HOST of "extreme" climate events last year have reinforced the need for more action to address climate change, the Climate Council has urged.

In its annual climate statement, the Bureau of Meteorology have confirmed that 2015 was the nation's fifth hottest year on record.

The council's Professor Will Steffen said the raw data did not show the effects climate change was having on people.

They included, he said, the impact of drought in farming regions, homes lost to bushfires and the impact of heatwaves on the elderly.
