Art to draw crowd at open studio

NOOSA looks set to become a centre of excellence for visual and creative arts in Australia with a three-day event being planned for August.

A group of artists and event managers have united to develop Noosa Open Studios, a three-day festival of art events and workshops.

"Internationally we might think of Florence or Paris, or of Provincetown in the US as the place to go for art. It's time to start thinking Noosa in Australia," organising committee chair Chris Pritchard said.

"In addition to Noosa's natural beauties, its beaches, rivers and hinterland, and its casual lifestyle, we believe some are also attracted to living in or visiting Noosa because of its robust quality arts sector."

Ms Pritchard said the Noosa Regional Gallery and other galleries in the region were supportive of local artisans and the new event would help promote the sector.

"The Noosa Open Studios event in August 2016 builds on that and provides attendees a unique fly-on-the-wall experience to personally visit artists, sculptors, ceramicists and weavers in their own studios to not only view their completed works but also observe them in their moment of artistic creation," she said.

"Noosa Open Studios believes that such an annual event will provide ongoing benefits to the region's artisans through attendees being also exposed to post-event workshops they can attend to develop their painting, sculpting, moulding, weaving skills."

The organising committee includes well-known artists Trish Bradford, Gabi Dick, Ellen Appleby and Dave Gilbert. They have been joined by Noosa newcomers Jenny Hines and Barbara Hamilton.

The committee also includes a number of experienced event and marketing managers.

"I have organised a lot of events on the Sunshine Coast and feel that with the experience and expertise of the current committee this will be one of the most successful ventures," committee treasurer Trish Bradford said.

"We have the support of Tourism Noosa, Noosa Regional Gallery and Noosa Arts and Crafts Association in the marketing and staging of this event."

The Noosa Open Studios event will be held from August 19-21.
