Keely Andrew in final at Burleigh

SURFING: World Championship Tour rookie Keely Andrew finished third in a World Surf League Qualifying Series event at the Gold Coast yesterday.

The 21-year-old won three straight heats in the 1000-point Burleigh Pro but could only manage a score of 9.90 in the four-person final, behind victor Macy Callaghan (15.50).

The event's defending champion, Sunshine Coast's Dimity Stoyle, was eliminated in the quarter finals.

Andrew will compete on the World Championship Tour this season after snaring a top-six berth on the QS last year while Stoyle is set to compete on the QS this year after failing to finish in the top-10 of the CT last season.

The men's Burleigh Pro was won by Ethan Ewing.

Mitch Coleborn was last night expected to open his Volcom Pipe Pro campaign. He was afforded third round entry into the 3000-point Qualifying Series event at Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii.

Alexandra Headland's Sophie McCulloch has won a wildcard into the Taggart Women's Pro, a 6000-point qualifying Series event.

"In 2016 I want to have a real go at getting as many WSL QS points as possible," she said.

She won the final over Sophia Fulton at Port Stephens to earn her spot in the event proper, which starts on February 22 at Merewether.
