Man swims into giant swarm of jellyfish just for a photo

PEREGIAN Beach's Simon Briggs is learning the hard way what it takes to be a professional surf photographer.

The 24-year-old budding snapper had no thought for his own wellbeing this week when he swam into a swarm of jellyfish to capture these stunning images at Peregian Beach.

"I was just down there surfing and I seen all the jellyfish sort of popping up in the wave as the wave formed so I got out of the surf, ran home and grabbed the underwater camera and headed back out there," he said.

A bloom of jellyfish has been causing swimmers and surfers grief as its passes the Coast during its migration north.

The Daily reported last week 20-30 people had been stung in the week leading up to Tuesday.

The bloom was identified as Catostylus mosaicus, aka "blue blubbers".

Their sting causes mild pain, which results in red, swollen welts, but the fear of pain could not deter Mr Briggs from capturing the images.

"I got stung a fair few times," he said.

"It probably hurt half as much as a blue bottle. It was worth every bit of pain for the photos."
