80km a day man puts marathon in the shade
IF YOU thought last weekend's 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon was tough, there is one Warana athlete about to enter a whole different world of pain as he subjects himself to what may be the ultimate endurance test.
Fitness coach Jamie Milne is three weeks away from his bid to run the 2000km from Melbourne to the Sunshine Coast - a feat which will require him to complete two marathons a day for three weeks.
Milne aims to raise $20,000 through his Many Miles for Mary charity for the Australian Dementia Research Foundation during Dementia Awareness Month.
Every year the extreme athlete picks a challenge in memory of his late grandmother Mary who suffered early onset dementia, last year running more than 900km around Tasmania.
Dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia. There are more than 353,800 Australians living with dementia. The major barriers to the development of new interventions and treatments in Australia are the lack of research capacity, funding and infrastructure.
One of the key purposes at Alzheimer's Australia is to support innovative Australian research that offers the best hope of defeating Dementia.
Milne aims to set off on September 17 from the Jones Brother's Gym on Albert Park Lake Melbourne, aiming to reach the Jamie Milne Training Facility at Warana.
He has put the call out to runners of all abilities to get behind this cause and join in the Stand and Fight Dementia km bank.
The idea is for everyone from the beginner to professional athletes to nominate a distance that challenges them, run it and then post it to the MMFM Facebook page in an active participation of support for this worthy cause.
To date Australian athletes marathon runner Aarthi Venkatesan and Commonwealth marathon representative Mel Panayiotou have announced their support and will join Jamie on the home stretch when he reaches Queensland.
